Carrie was lucky enough to find her way to agenting quickly after moving to New York City. (There was a brief stint in the Rolling Stone Art & Photo Department and a similarly brief career at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, a rare book and archive dealer specializing in 19th and 20th century literature.) After 16 years working at Russell & Volkening with the esteemed Timothy Seldes, she and her colleagues opened HSG Agency in 2011. Carrie specializes in children’s books but also represents a select list of adult fiction and non-fiction author as well as a few photography books.
Some of her children’s book clients include: New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Vashti Harrison (LITTLE LEADERS: BOLD WOMEN IN BLACK HISTORY – Little, Brown, 2017), picture book author and middle grade and YA novelist Erica Perl (CHICKEN BUTT – Abrams, WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU OJ – Knopf Books for Young Readers, and THE CAPYBARA CONSPIRACY – Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2016), author/illustrator and Theodore Geisel Honor winner Jonathan Fenske (BARNACLE IS BORED – Scholastic 2016), author/illustrator Rubin Pingk (SAMURAI SANTA: A VERY NINJA CHRISTMAS – Simon & Schuster, 2015), middle grade author Melanie Heuiser Hill (GIANT PUMPKIN SUITE – Candlewick 2017) and YA fantasy author Laurie Forest (THE BLACK WITCH – Harlequin Teen 2017).
Among Carrie’s adult clients are: Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of the New Horizons Mission and twice named to the Time 100 most influential people list (CHASING NEW HORIZONS – Picador, 2017), Whiting Award winner Paul Clemens (MADE IN DETROIT- Doubleday, PUNCHING OUT – Doubleday), novelist and journalist Ken Wells (MEELY LA BAUVE- Random House, GUMBO: A Travelogue – Norton, 2018) and photographer Michael Soluri (INFINITE WORLDS, Simon & Schuster).
In the kidlit world, right now Carrie is looking for humorous books and books with warmth, heart and a great voice in both contemporary and fantasy. She is also open to graphic novels and non-fiction.
The adult projects she is looking for are both fiction (no thrillers please – send it to Josh) and narrative non-fiction. Some non-fiction areas she is currently interested in are science, food, and photography.
Assistant: Ellen Goff
Ellen graduated from The University of Chicago in the spring of 2016 with a degree in English and Film and a focus in Creative Writing. Ellen has worked everywhere from The White House under the Obama administration to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. After time with Sanford J. Greenburger & Associates Literary Agency, she finally settled with HSG and now works as an assistant to both Carrie and Jesseca.
While Ellen is not currently accepting queries, she enjoys all fiction from science fiction to contemporary, especially Young Adult novels and books that read with the conciseness of screenplays. The best writing advice she ever received was to never end a sentence with a word the reader is expecting. She has a specific fondness for stories with a southern setting that remind her of her home state of Kentucky.
